Limone del Garda: the pearl of Alto Garda, a land of history, nature, and beauty.

Limone sul Garda

Perched on the Brescia side of Lake Garda, Limone sul Garda is one of the most charming and photographed villages in the entire lake area. With just over 1,100 inhabitants, this small gem of Lombardy has become over the years one of the most beloved tourist destinations on Lake Garda, successfully combining ancient history, breathtaking landscapes, and a high-quality tourist offering.

Where is Limone sul Garda located

Limone sul Garda is located in the northernmost part of the western shore of the lake, in the province of Brescia, nestled between the crystal-clear waters of Lake Garda and the rocky cliffs of Monte Baldo. The village is the last Lombard municipality before the border with Trentino–Alto Adige, making it a meeting point between Mediterranean culture and Alpine atmosphere.

Limone’s location is truly unique: until 1932, when the Strada Gardesana Occidentale was inaugurated, the village could only be reached by boat or via steep mountain paths. This geographical isolation preserved the authenticity of the village over time and even contributed to the extraordinary longevity of its inhabitants, thanks to the presence in their blood of a particular protein called Apolipoprotein A-1 Milano, discovered in 1974 by pharmacologist Cesare Sirtori.

Why visit Limone sul Garda

Visiting Limone means immersing yourself in a setting where nature has created a postcard-perfect scene. The terraces of olive and lemon trees sloping down toward the lake, the characteristic white pillars of the ancient lemon houses, the narrow, flower-filled alleys of the historic center, the picturesque little harbor: every corner tells a story of work, passion, and beauty.

It is no coincidence that Goethe, during his famous "Italian Journey" in 1786, was enchanted by this spectacle of grace and abundance.

How to get to Limone sul Garda

By car or motorcycle

Getting to Limone sul Garda is easy, and the roads leading to the village offer spectacular views.

From Tremosine sul Garda: If you are staying at the B&B Villa Delle Querce in Tremosine, Limone is only about 4 kilometers away, and the drive takes between 5 and 10 minutes.

From other locations: Those coming from the A4 Milan–Venice motorway should exit at Brescia Est, take the ring road toward Lake Garda, and follow signs for Salò. From Salò, continue along the Gardesana Occidentale (SS 45 bis) toward Riva del Garda until you reach Limone. Those arriving from the north can exit the A22 motorway at Rovereto, then follow the SS240 and the Gardesana road to Limone.

By bicycle

Cycling enthusiasts can reach Limone by riding along the Gardesana Occidentale, a challenging but rewarding route. The road features numerous tunnels and panoramic sections overlooking the lake. For a more relaxed and safer ride, it is possible to use the cycle and pedestrian path connecting several Lake Garda towns, although a complete continuous cycling connection between all lakeside villages does not yet exist.

By ferry

One of the most evocative ways to reach Limone is undoubtedly by ferry. Navigazione Lago di Garda regularly connects Limone with all the main towns on the lake, offering the chance to admire the village from the water, just as travelers once did. Limone’s small harbor is easily accessible and located in the heart of the historic center.

By bus

The bus service operated by SIA connects Limone with Riva del Garda, Desenzano del Garda, and Brescia. From the railway stations of Desenzano (to the south) or Rovereto (to the north), it is possible to take a bus directly to Limone.

The Garda Cycle Path

The most famous attraction in Limone is undoubtedly the Garda Cycle Path, inaugurated in July 2018 and quickly becoming one of the most photographed cycle paths in the world. This extraordinary engineering project extends for about 2.5 kilometers, suspended over the lake and anchored to the rock face at a height of about 50 meters above the water level.

The complete route from Nanzel (south of Limone’s center) to the border with Trentino, passing through the historic center and reaching Capo Reamol, measures approximately 4–5 kilometers in total.

The actual suspended walkway starts at Capo Reamol and stretches for 2.5 kilometers to the World War I memorial located right on the border between Lombardy and Trentino.

This cycle path can be used both by bicycle and on foot, 24 hours a day thanks to LED lighting integrated into the metal structure. The speed limit for bicycles is 10 km/h to ensure safety and allow everyone to enjoy the exceptional panorama. The walkway, 2.5 meters wide, is also suitable for families with children and beginners, as it is completely flat and protected by steel barriers.

In the future, the cycle path will allow riders to reach Riva del Garda.

Walks and hiking

Limone’s lakeside promenade is perfect for romantic walks, with views over the blue waters of the lake and the silhouette of Monte Baldo on the opposite shore. For those seeking something more adventurous, the Sentiero del Sole (Sun Path) offers a panoramic hike winding through ancient olive groves, providing unforgettable views of the lake and the village below.

There are trails for all levels: from the easy path to the Sopino Waterfall (reachable in 10 minutes on foot from Via Reamol) to more demanding hikes on Monte Carone, Monte Preàls, and up to Cima Mughera, one of the most scenic peaks in the area, ideal for experienced hikers.

These trails are also accessible to e-bike enthusiasts who wish to explore the inland areas.

Boat excursions

To admire Limone from a different perspective, it is well worth renting a small boat or joining an organized tour. Seeing the lemon houses, the harbor, and the village from the water allows you to fully appreciate its architectural and scenic beauty, just as Goethe did when arriving by lake.

Sightseeing and shopping

Limone’s historic center is a maze of cobbled alleys, small squares, and characteristic shops. Wandering aimlessly through the streets reveals hidden corners, flower-filled balconies, votive shrines, and romantic views. The many small shops offer local specialty products, from Lake Garda extra virgin olive oil and lemon-based products to handcrafted ceramics and textiles.

Every Tuesday morning (generally from early morning until early afternoon, usually around 08:00–13:00), colorful market stalls are set up along the lakeside promenade, selling food, fresh fruit and vegetables, local specialties, handicrafts, clothing, and accessories.

It is a great opportunity to shop, discover local products, and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, perhaps enjoying lake views while strolling between the stalls.

What to see in Limone sul Garda

The Limonaia del Castel

Among Limone’s must-see attractions is the Limonaia del Castel, one of the most characteristic and best-preserved ancient citrus gardens on Lake Garda. Dating back to the early 18th century, as documented in the Napoleonic cadastre of 1817, this lemon house was purchased and restored by the Municipality of Limone in 1995 to preserve a historical and cultural heritage of inestimable value.

Leaning against the rocky slopes of Monte Mughera, the Limonaia del Castel is arranged on terraces connected by stairways, offering spectacular views of the lake and the village. Inside grow over fifty citrus trees: lemons, cedars, grapefruits, mandarins, mandarin oranges, chinotto, clementines, and kumquats. The visit, which lasts about half an hour, is enriched by informational panels that tell the story of citrus cultivation on Lake Garda and explain the characteristics of the different varieties.

The entrance fee is a symbolic €2 (free for children up to 10 years old and during the winter season). The lemon house is open on weekends and public holidays, with hours varying throughout the year. For up-to-date information, visitors can contact the Limone Town Hall at +39 0365 954008.

Other historic lemon houses

In addition to the Limonaia del Castel, Limone still preserves the structures of other ancient lemon houses, such as the Limonaia di Villa Boghi (which also houses the Fishermen’s Museum) and the Limonaia del Tesol. The characteristic white pillars and terraced walls of these 17th-century constructions still dot the landscape today, bearing witness to a time when lemon cultivation was the village’s main economic activity.

The beating heart of Limone is its historic center, a tangle of narrow alleys, stone houses with ancient doorways, flower-adorned balconies, and intimate little squares. Walking through Via IV Novembre, Via Orti, and the other small streets means taking a step back in time, when Limone was still a small fishing village isolated from the rest of the world. Votive shrines, small artistic structures dedicated to saints, decorate corners and intersections, adding charm to the walk.

FAQ about Limone sul Garda

What is Limone sul Garda famous for?

Limone is famous for several reasons. First of all, for its historic lemon houses, the characteristic terraced gardens where lemons and other citrus fruits were (and still are) cultivated. Despite its name, the etymology of “Limone” does not come from lemon fruits but probably from the Latin "limen" (boundary), referring to its border position between the Brescia area and the territory of the Bishopric of Trento.

The village is also renowned for the extraordinary longevity of its inhabitants. In 1974, pharmacologist Cesare Sirtori discovered that many residents of Limone have in their blood a mutated form of apolipoprotein called Apo A-1 Milano, which produces a beneficial variant of high-density cholesterol. This protein significantly reduces the risk of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disorders, granting the inhabitants exceptional longevity: several residents have lived beyond 100 years of age.

Today, Limone is also famous for its spectacular suspended cycle path over the lake, which has become one of Italy’s most photographed attractions in just a few years.

When is the best time to visit Limone sul Garda?

Limone sul Garda enjoys a mild climate year-round, typical of the lake’s microclimate. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the best times to visit the village: temperatures are pleasant, nature is lush, and there are fewer crowds than in summer. During these months, you can enjoy relaxed walks, hikes, and cultural visits in peace.

Summer (July–August) is the busiest period, ideal for those who enjoy swimming in the lake and beach life. Temperatures are warm but not stifling thanks to Garda’s breezes. However, during this time the village can be very crowded, and parking spaces are often fully occupied.

Winter is the quietest season, perfect for those seeking relaxation and authentic atmospheres. The climate remains mild compared to the surrounding Alpine temperatures, allowing pleasant walks even in the colder months. Many tourist services close or reduce hours, but the village’s charm remains intact.

What are the columns in Limone sul Garda?

The columns seen in Limone sul Garda are the pillars of the ancient lemon houses, unique constructions that characterize the village and Lake Garda coastline. These structures date back to the 17th–18th centuries and were designed to protect citrus trees from the winter cold.

The white pillars, arranged in orderly rows on terraces connected by stone walls, supported sturdy wooden beams. From November to March, wooden panels and glass panes were fixed onto these beams, creating a kind of greenhouse that allowed lemons and other citrus fruits to be grown even at 46° north latitude, making this one of the northernmost areas in Europe where such fruits thrive.

During the warmer months, the panels and glass were removed to allow the plants to fully enjoy the sun and lake breezes. This scenic architecture fascinated illustrious travelers such as Goethe, who in his “Italian Journey” described Limone’s lemon houses as “a spectacle of richness and grace.”

Today, although commercial lemon production has greatly declined, the pillars and stone walls remain as evidence of a glorious past and represent a historical and architectural heritage of great value, giving Limone its unmistakable identity.

What should you eat in Limone sul Garda?

In Limone sul Garda, you cannot miss the experience of enjoying an artisan lemon gelato, often made with fresh local lemons or inspired by the citrus fruit that gives the village its name. Gelaterias such as LB Gelateria, Delizia al Limone, or Gelateria QCIARÌ serve creamy cones and cups with a fresh, tangy, and incredibly refreshing flavor—perfect while strolling along the lakeside or enjoying a sweet break on warm summer days.

Lemon gelato is a classic Italian summer treat that highlights the quality of citrus fruits and the Mediterranean atmosphere of Lake Garda, ideal as a light dessert after lunch or a relaxing afternoon snack.

For a typical lakeside aperitif, the Limoncello Spritz has become one of the most popular choices in Limone’s bars and venues, such as Il Cortiletto or Bar Limone – Food, music & friends. This refreshing drink is made with limoncello, prosecco, and soda or fresh lemon juice, adding a local, sparkling twist to the classic spritz.

This citrusy aperitif celebrates the characteristic aromas of the Lake Garda area and is perfect for a sunset toast, perhaps accompanied by small bites and a lake view.
